Upcoming Service Opportunities

CWEE Gets a New Boutique - click here to enjoy the pictures

Do you remember when you were a kid, deciding to dress up the basement and make a clubhouse? Well, that’s what we’ve been doing lately—converting a basement storage room into a funky place for a used clothing boutique for CWEE—The Center for Work Education and Employment. Check out the website to learn more about CWEE at www.cwee.org

We chose an industrial theme. Since it is a basement room, with chain link fence dividing each storage area, we decided we would just make the most of it.

CWEE staff members, Key Bank volunteers and Zonta volunteers cleared the room and cleaned it from water pipes to the cracked concrete floor beneath. Then the painting began—volunteers transformed the dingy white brick wall into crisp, spring green. A staff member painted the floor mink (grayish brown)—sounds elegant, doesn’t it?

We sorted through all the clothing and made many trips to Good Will with what was not appropriate for the participants. We used black ABS pipe and fittings to create the framework for four dressing rooms. We made side walls out of faux-leather and curtains from funky black, white and gray fabrics and hung them with U-bolts. Then we bought used mirrors from the Habitat Store, painted the frames and hung them from the ceilings with wire in the dressing rooms.

Now we’re in the final stages of putting accessories in place—furniture, display cases and racks. We organized all the clothing by size and added size dividers. Each step took time and effort but it was worth it! The transformation has been amazing!

Next week CWEE participants will choose a name for the new boutique and soon CWEE will invite us all to a Grand Opening. Stay tuned for that invitation.

My Grandma often said “Many hands make light work.” Well, it wasn’t light work, but many hands did some heavy-duty work and really made this project come together.

Consider Donating to CWEE

Have you lost weight and have some really cool clothes you can’t wear anymore? Or have you gained weight, own clothes that do nothing for you, or keep things hanging in the closet with tags on them that you’ve never worn? Well, CWEE needs clothing donations. The participants are 95% female, and the average age is mid- 20s so keep that in mind as you’re purging your closets. They need clothing appropriate for interviewing for jobs and for working in an office environment. They particularly need maternity clothes, plus sizes, shoes, jewelry.

As part of the curriculum, CWEE participants learn how to dress for an interview and present themselves in a professional manner. They go to the boutique to find clothes that will make them feel good about themselves—after all, Clothes Make the Man, right? They do not have to pay for the outfits they choose, but they do like things that are stylish. (If you haven’t worn it in fifteen years, it’s probably out of style—think shoulder pads and big hair.)

Bring your donations to any Zonta meeting. Sharon or Lois will take them to CWEE for you.
